HSA Volunteer Opportunities

Each volunteer opportunity serves a different, yet very important and specific, function towards the enhancement of St. James School. The following opportunities require at least one chair and a committee of varying size depending on the occasion

Book Fair, Box Tops, Bulletin Boards, Catholic Schools Week, Christmas Shop, Curriculum Enrichment, Directory, FieldDay, Giant Eagle, Guadalupe Day, Hayride, Homeroom Parents, Hospitality, Ice cream Social, Office Support, Pancakes in the Park, Publicity, Race For Education, Scrip, St. Joseph Day, St.Nicholas Day, Teacher Appreciation , Uniform Exchange, Wednesday Folders, Well Wishers, Yearbook

Book Fair:

Chair: Kristi Indovina & Denise Gevaudan

Two Book Fairs are held at St. James each year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. Books are sold for two or three days to students and parents. This fund raiser not only raises money for the school, but it also allows classrooms and the library to receive new books. The Chair sends out the flyers and tallies up the number of people coming so he/she knows how much food to bring.  The Chair also corresponds with Tim at Youthtowne to settle arrangements.Several people are needed to organize, set up, assist children and handle payments. The children have a blast!

Bulletin Boards

Chair: Tammy Petty

There are 2 H.S.A. bulletin boards, one for school publicity on upcoming events and one to display students' artwork etc. Each board should be updated monthly. One or two people are needed for this committee.

Catholic Schools Week

Chair: Amy MacDonald

Dates of event and theme to be determined.

Christmas Shop

Chair: Bev George

The Christmas Shop is totally for the children of St. James School to enjoy the season of giving. This is not a money making event, but a service for the children. It is a great opportunity to help the children choose gifts for their loved ones. Some home made gifts are provided by the committee as well as purchasing gifts from the retail shop called C & R Marketing. These items will be taken back if not sold. We must set up and pack up all the items that are sold. The Christmas shop is the first week in December. That week is busy and requires several people willing to help the Children shop. The more the better.

Curriculum Enrichment

Chair: Tammy Petty

Committee members are to work in conjunction with the teachers to schedule fun and educational field trips, in house assemblies (performers) and/or guest speakers. A small committee is needed to set up events throughout the year.

Directory:

Chair: Renee Pompi

A small committee is needed to help the chairman run off copies, collate and label the St. James School Telephone Directory. This project is completed right after school starts in the fall.

Education Box Tops and Campbell Soups Labels

Chairs: Tammy Petty

1 or 2 people to help collect, count, sort and mail box tops and labels as a fundraiser from General Mills and Campbell's.

Our school can earn merchandise and cash by collecting labels from various products. Nine people are needed to help collect labels from the classrooms, count, sort and mail the labels. This committee will give frequent updates through the Cougar Call. This committee is a great choice for parents who have younger children or who work outside the home and cannot volunteer during school hours.

Guadalupe Celebration December 12

Guadalupe Celebration is run by the H.S.A. Executive VP. The H.S.A. supplies hot chocolate and cups. Executive VP works with Theresa DiFolco and a few other moms to make cookies. The Homeroom parents serve the students in their classrooms. Held on 12/12 every year.

Hayride/Family Nights Out

Chair: Christine Depner

Hayride is held in the fall of the school year. The kids have a blast. The Chair sends out the flyers and tallies up the number of people coming so he/she knows how much food to bring. The Chair also corresponds with Tim at Youthtowne to settle arrangements.

Homeroom Mothers & Fathers

Chair: Michele Veek

There are to be no less than 2 and no more than 4 parents for each class. A parent may not be a Homeroom Mother or Father for more than 1 grade at a time. Responsibilities will include working with the teacher to organize parties and special needs of the class, helping to recruit volunteers for field trips, helping for special school and parish events and assisting with any telephone calls etc. Seventh grade Homeroom Mothers and Fathers organize the 7th & 8th grade picnic and 8th grade graduation.

Hospitality

Chair: Jennifer McKinney

A committee is needed to serve as hostesses for various receptions throughout the school year. Hospitality is responsible for providing food (snacks, cookies, etc), drinks (lemonade, ice tea, coffee), paper products, and decorations (when appropriate). In addition, the Hospitality committee is also needed to set up, and clean up. The Hospitality committee will work with the HSA Board to coordinate the various receptions.

Ice Cream Social

Chair: Renee Pompi

An eight to ten member committee is necessary to set up, scoop and serve the ice cream at the Ice Cream Party given by H.S.A. on the last day of Catholic Schools Week in January.

Office Support

Chair: Sue Ponticello

Opportunities include volunteering in the office to help make copies, etc.

Pancakes in the Park

Chair: Toni Burke

Pancakes in the Park takes place the first Sunday after the start of school. It is an event to kick off the school year. HSA partners with the Knight’s of Columbus for this Sunday morning breakfast at War Memorial Park. School families receive invitations to the breakfast. However, it is open to the entire parish to celebrate St. James School. A small committee of 4 or 5 is needed for preparations.

Publicity

One or two members in this committee will work with a staff member to inform the media about student and school happenings.

Scrip

Chair: Sue Ponticello

The chairmen are already in place, however, a few people are needed to sell scrip on Sunday mornings after any and all services. If while you are selling the scrip, a parishioner buys scrip that is not designated to a school family, then you receive the credit toward your scrip requirement.

St. Joseph Day

Chair: Sue Ponticello

The Chair works with the H.S.A. board on committee. Details of the day include: The Chair and the H.S.A. President purchase the food for the day’s celebration. We have served stuffed shells the past several years. The Chair and the Board then get together to prepare the food in the cafeteria kitchen the day before. A few other people have helped out in the past: One parent made soup; another parent provided dessert. It should be held around St. Joseph Day in March and the nun from Sts.of St. Joseph are invited to lunch.

St. Nicholas Day

Chair: Ernestine Lander

St. Nicholas Day takes place the first week of December. The Chair is asked to: research items to give to the children in their socks, order and store the items until St. Nicholas Day and stuff the socks the night before the celebration. In past years, items have been ordered from the Autom and Oriental Trading catalogs. Sample items from past years include: St. Nicholas prayer cards, glow in the dark rosaries, pencils and a couple of other small items. Due to the stringent regulations on food and candy, it is not recommended to put any candy or any other junk food in the socks. ”My favorite part of chairing this event is trying to find items that the children will be excited about along with keeping it religious in focus. It is fun stuffing the socks (of all sizes, colors, styles, etc.)”

Teacher Appreciation

Chair: Paula Rodgers

The Teacher Appreciation Committee is a group of about 10-15 parents who enjoy cooking and baking. We provide a lunch for the teachers on the ½ day meetings, usually once per month. The group meets at the beginning of the school year and we decide on all the menus and what each person will supply for each lunch. The chairman, then send reminders, via email, to everyone helping with the upcoming lunch. The parents then bring their dish to school. Other responsibilities as the chairman are to prepare the space and clean up after each lunch. The chairman also provides the tablecloths, plates, utensils etc. This committee also provides 2 small gifts each lunch that 2 teachers will win in a drawing. This committee is good for parents who don’t have much time to give during the school day, but enjoy cooking or baking at home. This committee always receives such nice compliments from the teachers that they really enjoy these lunches.

Uniform Exchange

Chair: Therese DiFolco

This committee only needs one or two members. It is their responsibility to organize and publicize the gently used uniforms that families exchange with each other. Donate what you don’t need and take what you do!

Wednesday Folders

Chair: Cindy Meurer

Wednesday Folders are sent home once a week to keep parents/guardians informed on things going on at school and in the community.

Well Wishers

Chair: Michele Veeck

This committee only needs one person to send cards to families or individuals that may need our support.  This is an ongoing job throughout the school year.

Yearbook

Chair: Karen Grimes

Several people to work on the production of the yearbook from start to finish. This usually wraps up during January.
