St. James Open House
Do you know any friends,
families, or neighbors who may be interested in learning about what Saint James
School has to offer? If so, submit their names and addresses to
the Recruitment Committee (using the form sent home in this week’s Wednesday
folder or by simply emailing rosemaryhmcnelis@verizon.net)
by January 29, 2010. We will be sure
to invite them to our annual Saint James School Open House for prospective
students and their families. The Open House is scheduled for Sunday,
March 21, 2010. Thanks in advance for
your help in recruiting new students to our school!
Sisters of St.
Joseph Need Your Help!
As you all know, the Sisters of St. Joseph have been a part of our
school's tradition for almost 100 years!
When the Sisters heard about our "All You Need Is Love"
dinner/dance, some have expressed an interest in coming. The $60 ticket price is too much for
them. Sr. Diane and Sr. Christy suggested
we sell tickets to the Sisters for the actual cost of the evening-$30. I would like to go one step further and
offer the parents and friends of St.
James School
to "sponsor a Sister". For
$30, a Sister of St. Joseph can join us for a great evening. I hear some of the Sisters are really
excited about the dance portion of the dinner/dance!!! Please support this great group of people
with your generosity. Thank you. If we receive donations greater than the
number of Sisters that can join us, we will use the funds to sponsor our
teachers.
Donations for the
sisters should be directed to Kelly Haluszczak. Make checks
payable to St. James School.
It has been an exciting
basketball season so far for the 3rd and 4th graders. A number of Division I
colleges have already expressed interest in some of our players, but since it
is against Diocesan policy to skip that many grades, there is no danger of
them leaving the program.
Let me start by saying thanks
to all the coaches. Coach McAllister is the guru of both teams. He organizes
and runs the practices, sends out all the emails, makes sure everyone has
what they need, etc. Needless to say, he is a shoo-in for MVP (Most Valuable
Parent). A special thanks to Coach Meurer and Coach DeFilippo for stepping up when I
begged them to help me coach 4th grade. Little did they know that they would
end up doing most of the coaching! Hats off to Coach
Zernich and Coach Benzinger, too. These guys are tireless teachers and
they really know their basketball.
But it’s all about the kids. You can see what a
special school we have when you see these boys in action. They are
classmates, teammates and friends. They have fun together, they play with
respect for one another, and they can take a foul and turn the other cheek
(and if you’ve been to any of the games, they get fouled a lot!)
The 4th graders are seasoned veterans who
demonstrate leadership on and off the court. There’s “Mr. Clutch,” Anthony
Guy. Harry “Smooth Operator” MacDonald. Ian “Buck” Rodgers, “Jumpshot Jordan”
Rheingrover, Michael “The Destroyer” DeFilippo, Gavin “Little Thunder” Ward,
Billy “The Globetrotter” Garrison, Declan “The Doctor” Urffer, and Kevin
Michael “The Maniac” Meurer.
The 3rd graders are a wild bunch that plays with
fire in their bellies. There’s Jacob “Bankshot” Benzinger, Jake “Cool Hand”
Commens, Anthony “Downtown” DiFolco, Quinn “King Of The” Hill, Jonathan “Shake & Bake” McAllister, Luke
“The Juke” Piccolo, Tommy “The Swami” Peilert, Luke “Slam Dunk” Saftner,
Jackson “Zoom Zoom” Zernich, and Jeffry “Mr. Quick” Zick.
Although we don’t keep official score, I can tell
you these kids have a winning record and they don’t back down to anyone. This
past Thursday night the 4th graders feasted on the Falcons of Our Lady of
Fatima in Aliquippa. We played solid D,
passed the ball well, and scored clutch baskets down the stretch. On
Saturday, the 3rd graders took their vitamins and sapped all the energy out
of St. Vitus.
One last thing, a big thanks goes out to all the
parents who drive the kids all over creation, and support us every step of
the way.
Stay tuned. More great basketball to come!
