Saint James Chess Club Shines in
Local Catholic Schools Chess Tournament
Since early October, twenty-six students representing Kindergarten
through 8th grade have been meeting in the school library
after school every Friday afternoon to learn about playing and winning chess
from master chess instructors John Surlow and Claude Kaponis. Their newly
acquired knowledge and sharpened chess skills were put to the test on
December 19, 2009 when nine students from the school’s club competed in a
Catholic Schools Tournament held at St. Louise de Marillac Elementary School
in Pittsburgh.
Representing the school in the competition were Joseph and John Auth,
Anthony, Austin, and Alexander Kuntz, Ryan McNelis, Bennet Pompi, Luca Stasa,
and Charlie Veek. It was an exciting day of intense competition.
The Saint James team members cheered each other on and hung together tightly
as a team. The day resulted with an outstanding showing of the team in
its first-ever chess competition.
A second session
of the chess club will begin on February 26, 2010. If you are
interested in joining, please complete the flyer and return to the school
office by February 18, 2010. We hope to continue to expand the
number of children who can participate in this club, but we need more parent
volunteers to make this happen. If you are interested in helping,
please call or email Rosemary McNelis (412.766.0716 or rosemaryhmcnelis@verizon.net). Scrip News
