Save the Date

St. James School's annual dinner dance is just around the corner! This year's theme is "All You Need Is Love". Don't we all need a little love? This is a throwback to the late 60's and early 70's, Ed Sullivan show, mod and hippie styles, peace beads and go-go boots. This sit-down dinner event will be held at the Holiday Inn in Moon Township on Saturday, February 13, 2010. Cash bar and appetizers at 6:30pm. Dinner at 8:00pm. Dancing and auctions throughout the evening. $60 per person ($30 from each ticket sale will go towards your $600 tuition/fee).

We look forward to everyone joining us. Invite your family, neighbors and friends (you will be credited with $30 from their tickets too!). Reserve your spot today! You should have received your invitation in the mail. If you did not, please let Joann Matten know. She will get one to you. If you need extra invitations for family or friends, call Kelly Haluszczak.

All reservations should go to the attention of Kelly Haluszczak at 724-457-0849 or mail your RSVP to: Kelly at 2531 Minton Drive, Moon Township, PA 15108. Any questions, call Joann Matten at 412-859-1281.

Saint James Chess Club Shines in Local Catholic Schools Chess Tournament

Since early October, twenty-six students representing Kindergarten through 8th grade have been meeting in the school library after school every Friday afternoon to learn about playing and winning chess from master chess instructors John Surlow and Claude Kaponis. Their newly acquired knowledge and sharpened chess skills were put to the test on December 19, 2009 when nine students from the school’s club competed in a Catholic Schools Tournament held at St. Louise de Marillac Elementary School in Pittsburgh.

Representing the school in the competition were Joseph and John Auth, Anthony, Austin, and Alexander Kuntz, Ryan McNelis, Bennet Pompi, Luca Stasa, and Charlie Veek.  It was an exciting day of intense competition.  The Saint James team members cheered each other on and hung together tightly as a team.  The day resulted with an outstanding showing of the team in its first-ever chess competition.

http://docs.google.com/a/stjamesschool.us/File?id=dcszhwwp_52dw52zqpk_bEighth-grader Anthony Kuntz and sixth-grader Austin Kuntz captured 2nd and 5th place trophies in the 5th through 12th grade beginner bracket division!  The team placed fourth overall, beaten only by chess powerhouse, Providence Heights Alpha Elementary School, Central Catholic High School, and St. Killian Elementary School, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively.  It should come as no surprise that the coach of the two winning elementary schools is none other than our own instructor, Mr. Surlow. We look very forward to the team participating in future tournaments and bringing home more trophies!

A second session of the chess club will begin on February 26, 2010.  If you are interested in joining, please complete the flyer and return to the school office by February 18, 2010.   We hope to continue to expand the number of children who can participate in this club, but we need more parent volunteers to make this happen.  If you are interested in helping, please call or email Rosemary McNelis (412.766.0716 or rosemaryhmcnelis@verizon.net).

Scrip News

What a scrip year it has been!  Our year to date profit is now over $28,000 with approximately $9,000 just in the month of December!  Thank you for your support of this important fundraising program.

Remember, it does not cost you anything, just your time and your ability to plan ahead and get the cards you need before you shop.   It can be difficult sometimes, but once you get used to it, it is very easy.  Also, it is a great way to meet your $600 fundraising fee requirement.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sue Ponticello at the rectory at 412-741-6650 ext. 315 or
saintjamesrectory@comcast.net.  Thank you.
