Crop Hunger Walk

On April 18th, St. James Church will gather with our neighbor Churches to walk from Osborne School in Sewickley to the Ambridge Area Foodbank, approx. 5 miles. We will walk to draw attention and support for the hungry in our community and abroad. Please join us in this endeavor by obtaining a sponsorship form and walking with us, or make a donation to CROP/Catholic Relief Services.

25% of the money that we raise through sponsors for each of the walkers will go directly to 2 local food banks. The balance goes to international organizations which help fight hunger. Catholic Relief Services is one of these groups that receives funds from the CROP walks, and they are in dire need of funds this year. CRS asks that you specify their name on your donation to make sure that it goes directly to them. Each year, CRS receives nearly $200,000 collectively from the many different CROP walks across the country, and they are hoping to direct this years monies towards helping feed women in Afghanistan.

With both the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, as well, this Catholic Relief Services is facing enormous challenges to help the suffering.

Please consider walking with us and raising money and awareness for Catholic Relief Services through this worthy project. Won’t you join us on April 18 at 1:30?

Please contact the rectory to sign up and receive the sponsor form or Patty Peilert at 412-269-9635 for ppeilert@yahoo.com  details.

PARKINSON’S AWARENESS DANCE                                         ALL ARE WELCOME!

On Friday, April 16th eighth grader Annamae Bolen is inviting all St. James students and families to a dance to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease (PD). PD is a movement disorder, so having a dance-which requires movement- is an easy way to raise awareness for this incurable disease.

The dance is from 6:30- 9:00pm in the SJS gym. There will be a dance contest and a bake sale.  Cost is $5/person or $10/family. Proceeds to benefit Parkinson’s Outreach programs.

*Note- Students in grades 5 and below must have an adult chaperone with them at the dance.

Students in grade 6-8 will need to be signed IN and OUT of the dance by a parent.

Please come and support this worthy cause!

JV Soccer

The St. James JV Soccer team had their first game of the spring season this past Sunday against a tough opponent, St. John of Monaca.  The Cougars are led by the returning 6th graders from the fall season:  Kyle Cardwell, Brandon George, Mason Grimes, Stephen Jancart, Harrison Kuchtjak, Colin Neville, Lauren Padalino, and Gabrielle Zernich.  Also returning from the fall season were 5th graders Gabrielle Gevaudan, Sarita Kunde, Ryan McNelis, and Julianna Nicolaus.  They are pleased to welcome 6th graders Colin Hill and Michela Stasa and 5th graders Katie Conry, Matt Rooney, and Helen Urffer to the team this spring.

The first half of the game was highlighted by great defensive efforts by the Cougars and quick deep strikes by the offense.  Their defensive efforts held their opposition to one goal in the middle of the half, but the offense was not able to convert any of their scoring opportunities.  In the second half, the Cougars settled into a more comfortable control of midfield and mounted good sustained pressure in the opponent’s end.  Despite their pressure, St. John’s was able to score an additional goal in the half and stave off our offensive pressure.  The final score was St. James – 0 and St. John – 2.

After the game, the coaches praised the team for their hard work and sustained efforts throughout the game.  The level of teamwork and unselfish play was admirable.  Even though it is recorded as a loss, this first game will count as part of building a strong foundation for the remainder of our season.

Varsity opens up season with big win over St John (Monaca)

Attention:
Business People, Accountants, Lawyers, and Architects

Did you know you can give from your state taxes to our Catholic school?  The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program allows you to give up to $300,000 a year to St. James School.  You receive a 90% tax credit if you give for two consecutive years.  The money goes to help needy families with tuition assistance.  You can specify that the tuition assistance be given exclusively to students attending St. James.

There is state tax credit money available July 1, 2010.  You can call Sr. Diane Cauley, one of our School Administrators, for more information.  Or also feel free to call Dr. Ron Bowes at the diocese, 412.456.3090 and just mention tax credits.  He will provide you with all the information you need.

Finally, you can also go to www.newpa.com and click on Educational Improvement Tax Credits.  Businesses fill out Appendix I SO and fax to 717.772.3581.

With your help students can have
“The Great Beginning That Lasts A Lifetime.”

Dear Parents,

Last week, the REACH Alliance launched a grassroots campaign that focuses on restoring funding to the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program – the campaign is called Operation Restore.  In 2008-2009, the EITC Program was a $75 million program – helping over 44,000 students attend the school of their choice and countless more through innovative programming.

As you know, in the 2009-2010 budget, the EITC Program was cut by $15 million, making the program a total of $60 million.  A few weeks ago, Governor Rendell introduced a 2010-2011 budget that cut the EITC Program by an additional $10 million – which would make the EITC a $50 million total program in 2010-2011.

Our goal for this campaign is to demonstrate overwhelming parent, school, business, community and national support for funding restoration for the EITC Program.

THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Bookmark www.operationrestorepa.org so you can check back for updates on the campaign and the budget process as it pertains to the EITC Program.
  •  Use www.operationrestorepa.org to contact your legislator, if you are local.
  •  You can also become a fan of Operation Restore on Facebook – www.facebook.com/operationrestore
  • Call the REACH office (717/238.1878) and ask for Operation Restore materials to distribute: we have buttons, bookmarks and other goodies for distribution.
  • Forward this email to friends, so they know that the EITC Program is the more than tax credits – it’s about the kids.

Additionally, we are conducting a series of Town Hall meetings in your town.  If you are close to town, I hope you can join us….

 2900 Noblestown Road

*Parking is free.  The venue was chosen to accommodate this request.  Though these meetings are at the Diocesan buildings, ALL EITC organizations, businesses and supporters are invited.*

Thanks in advance for your support,
